Overview

The Long Lost Lotus

In the late 1960s, Lotus created a concept for a Can-Am series race car. The plans were never developed and believed lost – until Chapman’s son Clive unearthed them in 2016. Now, the Lotus Advanced Performance division is bringing Colin Chapman’s vision to life, leveraging cutting-edge technology to create a truly unique piece of automotive history.

Colin Chapman originally worked with Geoff Ferris, the Team Lotus draughtsman, to develop a series of schematics outlining the shape and features for a Lotus Can-Am car. The drawings were copied on to microfilm and stored in secret.

The Spirit of the Past

Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Lotus, the Type 66 launch is testament to our continued desire to reimagine the very best elements of our heritage, updating them for drivers in the most thrilling way possible.

Pure Performance Pedigree

The Canadian-American Challenge Cup which the original Type 66 was designed for was an all-out spectacle of speed. Competition cars were allowed unrestricted engine capacity and minimal technical restrictions.

History Never Felt so Modern

The Type 66 is engineered to delivery a quintessentially Lotus driving experience, with an emphasis on light weight agility, aerodynamics and full throttle fun. This is not a classic car continuation, but a contemporary re-imagining of the original Type 66 concept car.

The two red & gold and black & gold colourways pay homage to classic racing liverys used by Lotus in the 1970s and 80s. Discerning drivers can also create a fully customised Type 66 using the bespoke colour and trim service.

At the heart of the Type 66 is a period-representative V8 push-rod engine. It’s mid-mounted for optimised handling, tuned by Lotus claimed to produce more than 830bhp at 8,800rpm. Bespoke modern-day components include a forged crank, rod and pistons, which generate torque of more than 746 Nm at 7,400rpm.
