The first-ever MotoArto event at The Bike Shed in Shoreditch, held on 3–5 July 2025, was a bold reimagining of the traditional car show.
Here’s what made it stand out:
The concept
- Fusion of automotive culture and contemporary art: MotoArto treated cars and bikes not just as machines, but as canvases and sculptures.
- Curated by Marchella De Angelis and Kim Shaylor, the event aimed to blur the lines between engineering and artistic expression.
What was on display
- Low-volume vehicles and resto-mods from makers like Frontline and Renard.
- Live installations and sculptural works by over 20 artists — including Sophie Tea painting directly onto a car during the event.
- Outlaw customs, digital art, and moving imagery, all woven into a curated journey through the aesthetics of speed and form3.
The philosophy
- Less about ownership, more about meaning and storytelling.
- A platform for independent builders and artists to showcase work that defies categories — from oil paintings to interactive installations.
- Emphasis on accessibility and diversity, with a mix of generations and gender representation among contributors.
It wasn’t just a car show — it was a cultural statement. If you’re into craftsmanship, storytelling, and the artistry behind machines, MotoArto was a landmark moment.
Renard Motorcycles and Maxim — frontman of The Prodigy — unveiled a stunning collaboration: a custom BMW R100 café racer named “Wings of Freedom”.
“Wings of Freedom”
In the deep blue of the tank, a pair of angel wings blaze with smoke at the edges — a symbol of loss, memory, and rebirth.
This unique Renard R100 No. 005 carries more than mechanical power — it carries stories.
When Maxim learned about the destruction of the original Renard factory in the March 1944 bombings, the image came to him instantly: wings — scorched at the edges, rising through smoke. A vision of loss, survival, and rebirth. Like a phoenix, Renard Motorcycles rose from the ashes, carrying its heritage into the future.
“Wings of Freedom” is the first piece in our Art Motorcycle Series — where machines become myth.” (Allan Kompus – Renard Motorcycles)
The Machine
- Based on a BMW R100, reengineered by Renard with:
- Modified cylinder heads and twin spark plugs
- Revised gearbox and hydraulic clutch
- Premium suspension and Beringer braking system
- Estimated output: 80 bhp and 95 Nm of torque
The Artistry
- Maxim, also a visual artist, treated the bike as a canvas:
- Hand-painted white feathers on a light blue bodywork
- Described as “delicacy meeting force” and “a painting in motion”
- Represents themes of fragility, transformation, and unexpected beauty
The Philosophy
Andre Uibomäe, Renard’s founder, gave Maxim full creative control, calling the result “a one-of-a-kind masterpiece”
Maxim said: “It’s not just about rebellion or motion; it’s about soul”
The Price Tag
- Listed for £100,000, aimed at collectors who value performance and poetry
It’s a kinetic sculpture as much as a motorcycle — a fusion of punk energy, fine art, and mechanical precision.
